oooh that's lovely, Mr. Meaning ...

anyway, I had a bit of fun chasing a dragonfly in a dim lane this afternoon ... I only had the 20/1.7 and he was moving pretty quickly ... not a "serious" image but definitely compact ... I think this might be a Hairy Dragonfly ... no doubt Barrie can confirm or correct

Paul,
It won't be a Hairy Dragonfly, they are the earliest to emerge (May) and their flight season is now well and truly over. Given it's blue and green colour and the very broad antehumeral stripes (the big green marks behind the head, the shoulder blades if you like), the fact that it was in a lane and presumably came close to you, given that you were using the 20mm lens I will go for Southern Hawker (they can be quite curious and come up to investigate you).

Yes, it's incredible. I could have sworn I'd posted...maybe I did it in Flickr?

I am almost an insectophobic, truth be told. OK, I am one...not an almost one. Well not for the butterflies or the grasshoppers or the dragonflies but for anything with lots of legs and that appears as though it could bite or sting me - including ticks. So I appreciate this thread for showing me their beauty and intricacies. Kudos to all!

some quick handheld shots from yesterday

While waiting for things to warm up before conducting a butterfly count yesterday a quick search of the boundaries of a small fallow field produced the following photo opportunities.

All with a Panasonic G1 and 105mm, f/2.8 Sigma DG Macro, handheld, no cropping of the digital negative.
