Street Street photography (Image thread)

Haven't posted anything in this thread in quite some time.

Great post processing Ray. I think the 2nd one is my favourite, the tilt really works well - adding drama. These shots make me want to get rid of my GH2! I really like the camera but what looks good through the EVF often looks pants when I get home. I've been dabbling with film cameras recently and I think I will continue with that. It slows me down and makes me think more about the composition and subject. I even enjoy winding the film on! I'm hoping what I can learn through film can improve my work with the GH2. Who knows..

Thanks Andy - appreciate it.

Funnel cakes are..... sort of gross, sort of delicious. Carnival food, fried and full of sugar what else could you want? I've had 'em - I try to stay away from them - mostly I succeed. Taste really good for a couple of bites and then just nasty because you start thinking about 'em...

Here's the official unofficial explanation:

Great shots all of them. It's hard to pick a favourite but I think it's the girl on the phone in the eclectic clothes. I like the way you've matched the processing to the content of the pictures.

Thanks Kathy. Yes that girl had style. You get a good variety of people at carboots but most dress pretty casual so when someone does dress well they stand out a mile - I guess that's the idea!

Sunday morning

I really like that first shot Will, but that's guy's face is just a little TOO overwhelmingly dark - the blackness adds to the image up to a point, but it would be nice to see just a little bit of detail in the right side of his face (to HIS right). I know that HiB&W setting will do that, but I was very surprised at how much I was able to pull out of the shadows of a few shots I took in that mode when I tried. Nothing like a raw file, obviously, but there's a bit of room to maneuver, if you're ever interested in giving it a try.

Thanks
I see what your saying Ray.
I've found that is possible to recover a lot of highlight detail from HiBW files as well. I did do quite a bit of pp to recover some shadow and highlight detail, but the trouble is if you start messing with them too much you may as well go for the normal B&W or convert from colour. Sort of defeats the purpose of HiBW otherwise.

Here is the original. Not sure I don't prefer it?

A few EPL3 shots from Philly this morning. I like the EP3 more as an all-around camera, but that flip screen is tough to beat for street shooting.

Nice shots as usual Ray. With the first one I like the high contrast and the lines. The tilt and the boy covering his face adds drama and a bit of mystery. No.4 where they are queuing at the van - I like the way the dummies appear to be in the queue also. No.5 is a good spot but I can't make my mind up whether the tilt works on that shot.

Thanks Norman. I like the first one too - I'd like to claim the little guy was scared from the earthquake, but I was in town a day early or the quake was a day late. He was really just shielding his face from the sun - had been for quite a while before I got close enough to take the shot. I probably should have straightened the 5th one - I don't tend to see tilt unless its really disorienting and I didn't even notice it in that one. And, yeah, the window dummies in the back of the line was the whole point of the fourth but I wasn't sure how well that came through...

Here are a couple more I processed a day later. I wish the gal on the bike was in better focus, but I'm a sucker for nicely dressed women on utilitarian bicycles - it always feels so European to me just because it tends to be found a lot more in many European cities than just about anywhere in the States. Its not a great shot, but I like it...
