Street Street photography (Image thread)

Doing street is a big thing for me. Not only because I love the genre so much, but because my moments in towns or cities are scarce and I still have some fear to overcome to get the images I want. So often my nerves get in the way of framing the elements I want. This one sort of worked for me as I caught this determined young guy gripping tightly to a suitcase, behind him a baby and all matter of worldly 'things', in front (so confronting to avert his gaze) is marriage and old age. The "No Stopping" sign and the direction it's pointing topped it off. A rare moment for me and not so sharp due to over-eager and nervous hands....

I really like that first shot Will, but that's guy's face is just a little TOO overwhelmingly dark - the blackness adds to the image up to a point, but it would be nice to see just a little bit of detail in the right side of his face (to HIS right). I know that HiB&W setting will do that, but I was very surprised at how much I was able to pull out of the shadows of a few shots I took in that mode when I tried. Nothing like a raw file, obviously, but there's a bit of room to maneuver, if you're ever interested in giving it a try.

Maybe the camera was metering on the sunglasses? ; )

Thanks Norman. I like the first one too - I'd like to claim the little guy was scared from the earthquake, but I was in town a day early or the quake was a day late. He was really just shielding his face from the sun - had been for quite a while before I got close enough to take the shot. I probably should have straightened the 5th one - I don't tend to see tilt unless its really disorienting and I didn't even notice it in that one. And, yeah, the window dummies in the back of the line was the whole point of the fourth but I wasn't sure how well that came through...

Here are a couple more I processed a day later. I wish the gal on the bike was in better focus, but I'm a sucker for nicely dressed women on utilitarian bicycles - it always feels so European to me just because it tends to be found a lot more in many European cities than just about anywhere in the States. Its not a great shot, but I like it...

Ray, I just really like the settings you're using in your post processing. I don't have to look at the name as I know your B&W photos as I go through the site. I like the "style"!

Here's a reworking of an old shot, done with my ex-LX5 in NYC last October. I've always liked the shot but was never happy with the straight color processing. So yesterday I opened it back up in Silver Efex Pro and had another go at it - don't know why I waited so long - this is what it was always supposed to look like! To reference back to another discussion in another thread, this is perhaps my favorite of the my street photos where I'm clearly a participant, not just an observer in the shot. It was a direct interaction and the elements just lined up well. Not what I'm usually trying to do and I rarely like the results when it happens this way, but this is an example of why rules are made to be broken... Just showed this in the street thread across the hall too, so some of you may be seing it for the second time.

Had a request for the before and after. I couldn't get the mouseover code to work, so here's both:

Ray, I thought for sure I had posted here...but once again it must have been on Flickr. Your reworking is excellent - and I've always had this as one of my favorites...and it's even better now!
