Fuji Fuji New Rangefinder form!

Thanks for your kind replies so far.
To me it feels like "reincarnation of the seventies camera...in a better way".
(don't tel to others: I don't like the price, our secret...pssst)

I appreciate the link to the pictures. I'm very much in the market for an X100 in the hope that it fills some of the shortcomings of my Leica X1.

Now in truth when I first saw the X1 images at Dpreview.com I couldn't see the magic and it wasn't until I had my own X1 that I began to be blown away by the IQ.
Looking at the X100 images I also feel less than enthusiastic.
Vignetting looks to be well handled but barrel distortion seems excessive and surely could have been dealt with by in-camera processing.
Resolution ( by looking at the cat photos ) seems well below what I expected and no competition for an X1.

Given such a stylistic website and a superb campaign to maintain the hype , I'm surprised that Fuji thinks that these images are good enough.
I need to see more.

I agree nippa and want to see more, too. I'm sure we will. I also recall feeling as you did in re the X1..even when I downloaded someone's RAW files I still wasn't sure.

I continue to keep the faith and look forward to seeing some great photographs sooner rather than later and, ultimately, I hope some of my own with this camera.;)

I agree with all the above, images are nice and a few look pretty sharp but they and no match for the X1 at all. But as said i will reserve judgment until i have seen more images.

Will i be buying one...probably not as it would be cheaper and better for me to buy a fixed focal length lens for my E-PL2 like a Zeiss Biogon 18mm

True!

If i spent say £600 on a top notch 18mm lens for my E-PL2 (2x 18=36, same-ish focal length as X100) i would have a camera that gave what looks to be better IQ than the X100 and still be cheaper even after buying the camera plus i would have the advantage of still being able to swap lenses. OK the X100 has a view finder but even if you bought a used Olympus viewfinder the cost will be roughly the same as a X100 bearing in mind the cost of a new E-PL2 will go down probably much quicker than the X100. Or at least depending on price of the lens you but the price will be similar.

The images posted by Fuji are probably straight out of camera so there will be room for improvement especially for sharpening. The colours look very very nice and looks great for people pics!

I have been playing about in Photoshop with the test images and I'll be honest, they scrub up pretty well! With a bit of fiddlin they look sharp and even across the whole image. There is very little fall off at the corners and if done right these images could look as good as the leica X1..... in my opinion.

I had a fiddle in Photoshop with some of the images that were uploaded by Fuji on their site and i must say they were easy to make look really nice. The lens looks very good as the images are even corner to corner and with a bit of editing can be made to look as good as the Leica X1 images..or near enough! This could be a great camera!

I couldn't resist a quick look at the samples after reading all this ;) I downloaded the one that looks to be a rusty warehouse and it looks pretty good to me. Nice dynamic range and sharp enough (looking at it sideways!!!) If it had a 50mm lens then I would be sorely tempted but from my experience with the Leica X1's 35mm range, it's probably not for me. The Leica is not my weapon of choice but excellent for travel luckily, so it's not been a waste :) I feel much more in tune with the 50mm lens on the GXR.

That's the problem for manufacturers of this type of camera, They only appeal to those either willing to put up with the fixed focal length or prefer that focal length. I expect most who may put up with the focal length would rather pay half the money and get either a camera with fixed zoom or interchangeable lens system camera.

It will sell on looks i think initially but then hopefully on image quality. There's no doubt it's going to be a great camera but as with most things it's not for everyone.

I jib a bit at the idea that people would buy it and "put up" with it ... does that come more from your personal preferences about cameras, Andy?
Not everyone wants the same thing, and shelling out the sort of dough that the Fuji is expected to cost wouldn't attract too many people who are willing to "put up with it"!

It's not my thing either (pretty though it is), by the way, and my response to the thread title was "It's not, and it won't be" ...

I think people will 'put up' with the lens as they want the camera for various reasons. Some want it just because it's new and different, some because it's classic looking, some because of the viewfinder etc. I would love that camera and if were given to me for free then i would 'put up' with the focal length.

Any offers? :D

1) It is like a Fixed-Lens rangefinder camera, like what I started using when I was 11 years old. A very long time ago;
2) The hybrid viewfinder is exciting. Using this technology for interchangeable lens rangefinder style cameras eliminates many issues regarding parallax and field-of-view seen through the viewfinder vs what the lens sees. I expect an Interchangeable lens RF making use of this technology to follow.
