Sony The NEX system

DJ, The Nex 5 has a very good UI. It's a very intuitive camera.
It is very fast to use. The new model that will be released at some point, promises to even improve on an already good camera. CV, Zeiss etc will release lenses soon and then the Nex format will fly.
I love the GF1 but felt that my IQ has improved even with the kit lens and the 16 on the Nex.
That is an argument that is not an argument.
I'd love to see m4/3 really take off but I don't see any sign that it will.
Don

Interfaces always is a subjective thing. Now as I am a jpeg shooter, the iq has two sides. Raw level sony wins. I still prefer oly jpegs. If sony can get rid of the destructive nr, then the system for me becomes more palatteable.

In terms of taking off, mft is doing great in asia. The reason its not here is because of bad marketing and distribution. Casual buyers will buy sony as a name over a better product.

When the NEX system was launched they did say there was going to be a NEX 7 sometime after the 5 & 3 were released. There were no real details but i think this is what to expect for the next Sony Camera. Lenses 1st then a new bigger better NEX :)

Andrew,
The sensor is easy to clean as it's larger than some others. There is a large opening from the lens mount so it's rather easy to approach. I'm very happy with the kit zoomie and in love with the 16.
That's me tho' as Ray has stated...I live a single focal length.
True enuff....
Kevin, I post because my wife let's me....

I ain't been married 20 years but I've been married over 40 years just to 4 different woman...

Very true. As a married man of 20 years, I have learned that it is easier to just do what I am told.
Hmm, let's see... I will have I've been married twenty three years this coming September and my husband still does not do what he is told.:drama:

Don, you are too much!:D

Back to the NEX system's options and offerings.

The NEX is here to stay. When it was first announced, I wanted to hate the NEX. The NEX3/5 are just downright ugly. I was happy with my EP2's classy looks, which is a nice match to the classy look of the M cameras. And no buttons on the NEX? What's up w/ that?

Then I was foolish enough to try one out, and I was blown away by how well the NEX handled high ISO in comparison to my EP2. The NEX' kit lenses are underrated too, IMO. But like others have said, the future of the NEX will depend on availability of more native lenses. The photos of mockups that have been floating around in internet do not contain any pancake lenses, which IMO, is a bummer. Imagine the ability to stick fast pancake primes like a 20/1.7 on a NEX body.

I don't buy the argument that NEX lenses will always be bigger than m4/3. The kit NEX 18-55 is about the same size as the Pany 14-45. Samsung, which also uses APS-C sensor on its NX, has been able to build relatively small fast pancakes like the 30/2. So a powerhouse like Sony should be able to make small lenses for the NEX as well.

My only fear for the NEX system is if Sony decides to put the bulk of its resources into the SLT (A33/55).

I JUST FOUND THIS SITE AND REGISTERED and placed my comments and questions ont he welcome forum site.

anyhow i am looking for advice ont he nex 5 as it applies to utilizing leica r and m lenses and also kodak retina reflex lenses made in germany int he 60's by scheneider-krauznauch ?/,

any input from any of you ?

have not bought the nex 5 yet awaiting the possibility of an improved new with more controls on the surface ot the body.

Hi

You just need to pop along to ebay and purchase a Leica M to NEX adapter or Leica R or whatever. There are loads of adapters available at good prices. I have a Leica M to Micro 4/3 adapter but no Leica M lens!!! Will get one soon enough though.

As I understand, the Nex 3 is identical to the Nex 5 except that the body is a slightly different shape, there's more plastic in the construction, the video isn't as fancy, and it doesn't take a wireless remote. I'm not aware of any other differences. I believe its being discontinued because they're getting to introduce a new model in April or May. If there's a good deal on a 3, I can't think of a reason not to buy it other than to wait until the next generation. But no real downside relative to the Nex 5.

Pointless speculation mode on: I doubt Sony are going to put the bulk of their efforts into SLT. The A77 is pretty much done and the next NEX is next. In the long term the SLT is a compromise and will disappear. Just as soon as fast AF becomes possible without the separate AF sensor the SLT's will become mirrorless as well. The E-mount will get plenty of attention from Sony because it is not only a still camera mount, it is also a video camera mount and while the Alpha/NEX/Cybershot division may not be huge within Sony the video camera division is huge: Pointless speculation mode off.

Thanks Ray. I did a Google search and I think with my big hands the NEX 5 may be easier to hold and shoot with. The larger grip and placement of the shutter release look compelling. I wonder if after chasing small sensor compacts without pleasure the NEX with 18-55mm could be what I'm looking for. Not quite as compact, but perhaps the smallest of the large sensor compacts. And perhaps just the thing for my summer vacation with the family. I think my Sigma DPs are going away so a trade could be in order. And I'm getting antsy to try my Zeiss 50mm C Sonnar again. Ricoh's m-mount won't be out until later this fall.

Damn I sound gullible

Armanius, Any concern in getting the NEX 3 over the 5? The 3 is discontinued, but still available.

I got the NEX3 first, then bought the NEX5, and eventually returned the 5. They are the same in every way, except the grip, the build of the body (magnesium vs. plastic), and the video format. The primary reason I kept the 3 over the 5 was the grip. The 3 just felt better in my hand, because I have long skinny fingers. Although the body is plastic on the 3, it still feels very well built. As for the video, I'm not a huge fan of AVCHD. And I don't shoot video very often either.

So no concerns for me. :)

I actually found that the larger grip on the 5 was more difficult for my long fingers to hold on to. The squarish grip on the 5 wasn't deep or fat enough. The flatter but wider grip on the 3 was more secure in my hands.

Exactly my experience. I tried the NEX5, but the exaggerated grip cramped my fingers. I found the NEX3 more comfortable to hold. Then again, I never complain about my EP1 grip, so perhaps I just favor subtle grips. Like Armanius, i have long fingers.

This whole grip thing is so interesting. I had started a post earlier but got waylaid. I have fairly long fingers and can cover over an octave on a piano, though I don't consider myself to have "big hands"...I am, after all, 5' 9" tall. I found carrying the NEX5 incredibly easy and comfortable. That said, I have never held a NEX3.
