Fuji Fujifilm Finepix X100 - Pricing, Availability and general OMG

Yep I noted that price in the first post soon after you mentioned it. I was hoping someone had seen a smaller number with a £ sign already in front of it... :)

Great! Didn't notice that, thanks. I was just coming to post that i saw it for £899 including delivery on amazon.co.uk, but someone has already mentioned it :). That's the price it was said to be not so long ago in the UK, then it jumped to 999 which I thought was annoying, so glad atleast amazon are at that price... I have little experience with amazon though, and certainly no pre-order experienced.

If pre-ordering does it 'set in stone' the price you 'click' on? Or does it just take a deposit and then the balance is whatever they want it to be when they actually get it in stock?

Gosh, I don't see how they could legally charge you more when you've pre-ordered at a stated price and given them your credit card number. I'd read each company's ordering information carefully, however.

Ray, where are you? I expected you to cover the breaking news here, too.;) Thanks to Ray's post over on MU43, I'm bringing a link here for those who are interested in the new Fuji X100 - and this is not a prototype but the real thing: X100 Forums has secured an X100!!! This thread was started last night by one of the Administrators there, Andronicus who wrote:
I wanted to take a few minutes to share with the forum that we have secured a production unit from a friend in Japan and will be putting the camera through the paces asap! I'm going to take a little time and compose some initial impressions and then the schedule is to do an X1 vs X100 shootout tomorrow afternoon here in Austin...
Read on Macduff, as they say, if you're interested!

I had a play with some pre-production models last night at the Sydney launch here in Australia.

Only one camera had the latest firmware, but a friend and I played with it quite a lot and here's what we think:

OVF is awesome. EVF is on par with the Olympus VF-2 in good light, but lags behind and becomes choppy in low light.
AF accuracy in OVF mode is disappointing, missed 50% of my test shots (I suspect due to parallax error)
Camera needs more grip, always feels like it's about to slip out.
AF is slow, only about as fast as the E-PL1 w/ 20/1.7. For some reason it was many times slower still when shooting with the screen on (i.e. not using the viewfinder)
In normal AF mode, camera focuses down to 30cm; any closer than that and you get a red "!AF" symbol (obviously you change to macro mode for closer stuff)
General build quality about on par with E-PL1 / E-PL2. Definitely doesn't feel as solid as E-P1 / E-P2.
Write speed to the card is horrendously slow. Taking one picture and reviewing it takes about 10 seconds!??

High hopes for the production version fixing some of these issues, all I can say for now is that it isn't the instant winner some of us were hoping it would be. Interesting camera nonetheless :)

Well according to some posts elsewhere people that have ordered early via Amazon here in the USA are expecting delivery in early April. My order via Amazon on 2/18 or so still shows as being "up in the air" - my terms. ;-) Thankfully, I have read a number of mini reports from folks who have the non beta models and the reports are quite encouraging.:D

Here's another review from a British photographer - not gushing but quite positive with plenty of pros and cons. About the most useful one yet for the stuff I'm interested in.

Everyone's take on the AF speed seems to be different, though. I'm just gonna have to form my own impression on that one. But in terms of the controls and how it helps you actually get the shot, this review was quite good:

Also, Nikon makes its high-end cameras and some of its batteries in Sendai.

I suspect much of the US-bound X100 shipments were already on cargo ships, so it probably won't affect short-term supply, but I do worry about long-term effects for all concerned.

Although I do not yet have this camera, a friend of a friend's (in France) does and is reporting back that he is very happy with the camera and that the optical viewfinder works beautifully.(y)

I found this press release via Steve Huff's site: Fuji Announcement: Due to Earthquake, delay in Fuji X100 shipments
PRESS RELEASE: Press statement following recent earthquake and tsunami in Northern Japan

14 March 2011 — Following the recent earthquake and tsunami in Northern Japan Fujifilm can confirm that its Taiwa-Cho factory, 20 miles from Sendai city, has been affected.

Fortunately, none of the workers at the Taiwa-Cho factory are reported injured but inevitably some damage has occurred to the factory building, causing a temporary halt in production for the FinePix X100. To this end, Fujifilm is expecting a delay to market for the X100.

Fujifilm is currently considering all possible options to minimise the delay and the disappointment for the many consumers who have given the X100 such an incredible reception.

The rest of Fujifilm’s range has been unaffected, due to manufacturing being based outside the region.

I’m sure you will also want to join us in extending our thoughts and condolences to everyone affected by these terrible events in Japan.

Needless to say, I was very thankful to read that no one at the factory has reportedly been injured.

Now on a more upbeat note, I have good news. I just received notice from B&H Photo that although they do not have the Fuji X100 in stock, they are accepting pre orders. This is a very good sign for Fuji, for B&H and for those who are looking forward to trying out this camera. (y)

I received that too and it was surprising. That usually means that B&H has units on the way. Go ahead BB... NEX or Fuji???

I'm glad no workers were injured and I hope everyone is able to remain safe as the facilities are repaired and brought back into production.
