Sony The NEX system

Received my NEX 3 yesterday. The 3 does indeed have a better grip than the 5; it balances well with the kit lens. The kit lens is fine, but so far clearly not a great lens. But good enough for my primary intended purpose. The dynamic range of the sensor is outstanding and makes great B&W. The JPGs are pretty good too. I plan to upgrade to V3 FW this weekend. I keep wanting to put my eye up to the viewfinder, though.

The one irritation is that I'm reminded how much I don't really like the 3:2 format. If my 4:3 cameras have a 3:2 option then why can't my Sony have a 4:3 option???

Possibly depends where you "came from". Film and SLR users are probably used to 3:2, compact camera users 4:3. I used to change my compact cameras and E-P1 to 3:2 but I figured I might as well should the full number of pixels and crop later if I wanted to.

I've had the NEX-5 well over a week and I love it! NEX image quality at 1600 and even 3200 is amazing! This is great because I love to shoot in low light. I do wish that Auto ISO went all the way to 3200.

I like the flip-up and flip-down screen and use it both ways. Contrary to some I think the NEX is beautiful, though I admit I had to get used to it. I don't care at all that zoom lenses look big on it because I still get the weight benefit of the tiny body. The build of the body and the kit zoom are impressive without being heavy. Maybe I was just ready for ready for a tiny silver camera...

The shutter is really loud. It gets the attention of animals and would scare birds, I fear. I'm curious as to whether other Sonys have the loud shutter, esp. the A33/55?

I got a cheap Nikon adapter that works on both G and D lenses, so I can set aperture even on lenses that lack an aperture ring, which is fantastic. For me (YMMV) it's easier to manual focus than the EPL-1. So far I've used a Sigma 105 macro and a Nikon 50mm on it with good results, esp. the Sigma, but then I love macro. I do see better image quality with these lenses than the kit zoom, which is to be expected. I will try other lenses soon. The kit zoom is good for a kit lens, though as noted in reviews it has distortion on both ends. It focuses fast if there's any decent light at all. I tend to shoot wide or long, so I constantly bump up against its focal-length limits, but don't want to shell out for the 18-200. I don't have the 16mm yet. I would like to see a 12mm or 14mm prime, or a short ultrawide zoom, and something on the long end. Sadly, I'm not as excited as Ray and others about the upcoming 24mm because I don't shoot much at that focal length (36mm equivalent). But that's just me.

I would LOVE a viewfinder for manual focusing and because holding a camera at arms length means I need to set a higher shutter speed. My hands aren't as steady as they should be! It does help to hold the camera at waist level using the flip out screen, or to put it on a little Joby gorillapod and brace that against my body to steady the camera. But I would welcome a VF, esp. if it comes on when it senses my eye and reverts to the LCD when I take my eye away.

I would like to lock AF independent of the shutter button, but I'm not having much trouble doing without it so far. For me it would make sense for the camera to be a little taller and have room for a small popup flash and another programmable button (which I would set to AF lock). The little popup flash on the EPL-1, which can be bounced, is quite useful.

HDR, sweep pano, and handheld twilight are really useful and fun! As I think Olli said, it's a shame it's so cumbersome to get to HDR, esp. if you shoot RAW. You have to press Menu, go into Image Size and change to jpg, then go to Brightness/Color and select HDR. You also have to switch back to RAW when you stop shooting in HDR mode. That's a LOT of clicks and if it can possibly be changed in firmware, it really should be. None of that is necessary with AutoDRO or Scene modes or Pano, which automatically switch to jpg from RAW.

I don't care much about video and the few I've taken I haven't figured out to view on a Mac, despite some attempts in another thread to help me. I just haven't gotten around to figuring it out yet.

In the end it comes down to (still) image quality and I am really pleased with this camera! I'm more convinced than ever that I only need a bulky DSLR for birds, and maybe not even for that.

@ Janis - The shutter of my former A55 is as loud as my NEX 3. A camera that has a pretty quiet shutter is the Nikon D7000. VERY impressed at how quiet it was. And yes, the menu organization is just very downright illogical, especially for a camera that is totally menu driven.

As for formats, I never quite developed a preference. I figure that I'll shoot on the highest possible setting. Later on, I can always crop to whatever format I want. And I typically will crop out unsightly things off anyway. :)

I looked at both the NEX3 and 5 and for me the grip on 5 is much better; I think this is to do with the size of hands generally female hands are smaller than males; regarding the shutter noise having only used the Oly Pen in recent years it isn't a problem for me, I can remember the first SLR Praktica I owned that was the noisy-est camera anyone could own!.
When I bought the Leica X1 I have to listen to hear the shutter at all!

I am thinking about trading in the D700 for the D7000. Full frame is not great for birds unless you can afford and want to carry around huge lenses. If the menu is like other Nikon DSLRs I'm used to it. But even the D7000 is bigger than I want these days. It has crossed my mind to get the D5100 if it seems decent, just for the smaller size and lower cost. I will be watching the Nikon mirrorless too, but fear the price will be outrageous.

I have just read to-day that Sony are no longer to sell the NEX3 in Japan (re Amature Photographer UK mag:) This of course has led to speculation that this model will be axed altogether. Considering the problems in Japan who knows what the future will be.

Penny, I don't think the NEX3 is still being sold here in the states and I have absolutely no doubt that Sony will be moving along with its future NEX plans.

***Please note that my above statement was a hurried but mistakenly typed reply. I meant to write that the NEX3 is still available here.

There was a rumor of a NEX3c or something like that, but I think Sony and the people of Japan have more issues at the moment, sadly. It is frustrating in such a connected age to see so much need, and so little ability to reach out and help beyond Prayer and donations.

BB it is still available. Both B&H and Amazon have it. But I do hope that Sony evolves the NEX line soon. So far I'm enjoying my NEX 3, but the system needs better lenses and an EVF.

I don't even know where they start! Entire towns washed away, miles and miles of piled debris and bodies, and a nuclear disaster in the making. I made a donation, but in this kind of event they will need continuing donations down the road.

Yes, Andrew - I didn't mean to write what I wrote because I'd just checked B&H myself!:redface: I was in a hurry definitely made a mistake in that first part of my sentence! Thank you!

Do you know what.........

[no Andy, tell us]

OK I will.....

I'm starting to love my NEX 5. The more I use it the more I'm liking it especially with manual focus lenses. I expected to be using the E-PL2 for all manual work as it has body IS but no! The next gets used mostly as I have no problem with camera shake at the focal lengths I use and the results are (IMO) better than the Olympus. The NEX sensor really is it's crown jewel and nail a half decent lens on the front and you have a camera small enough to pocket and good enough to rival decent DLSLR's. It's a shame it's let down by sub standard kit lenses but even they are not bad but you do have to accept they are not great and have their own 'feel'. I can't wait to see what comes out in the next few months and am waiting mostly for the Zeiss 24mm f/1.7.

As far as I am aware NEX3 is still on sale in the UK as said its the Japanese market will not have the '3' any more; this has led to speculation of its eventual demise world wide.
To be honest I see little point in keeping both cameras going anyway.
I agree with I think it was Andy who mentioned the lack of Lenses for the NEX series; those available with full auto focus are I think two the 16mm and a 18-300mm zoom which I think is about £600 too expensive; for me at least.

Its an 18-200 and yes, very expensive. And quite large for the tiny little Nex cameras. I handled one in a store and it doesn't handle as badly as it looks like it does, but its still a ridiculous looking combination - to me sort of defeats the purpose of the small body. For a lens like that I'd want at least a Pany G or Sony A series body. There's also the kit lens that's 18-55 and not a bad pairing with the 16. But I seem to use only the 16 the vast majority of the time with the Nex. When the Zeiss 24 f1.7 is available, that will likely live on the camera almost full time. Unless the X-100 steals my heart first, but I'm having my doubts about that...

Andy, do I feel a sale coming on?

You NEXians are really making it difficult for me.:daz:

Nope! The E-PL2 is staying BUT if the Carl Zeiss 24mm f/1.7 lens is expensive, brilliant and available I may have start thinking!!! Trouble is the NEX with a decent lens is better than the E-PL2. I'll keep both as long as a I possibly can. (y)

I read that the NEX 3 was or has stopped production as they are not selling very many and the NEX 5 is flying out the door. I'm more interested in the NEX 7 or whatever it's going to be called!!
