No, I don't have Photoshop.;)

Silver Efex Pro2 has a boders option but it usurps a portion of the image itself, which is not OK with me many times.

I see on Adobe that there is Mogrify that will, among other things, apparently give to option to add borders...but the comments aren't too encouraging. Has anyone tried this and if so what do you think?

Any other suggestions?

I have a picture that would really benefit from a border - just a white border would be fine.

Any suggestions?

Why in the world there is not an outside of the picture frame option in SEP is beyond me. LR/Mogrify does that. All SEP would have to do is either shrink the image or add pixels for the frame to it. Allowing SEP to randomly crop your image for you just to fit a frame is obscene. Still, I use it

And BTW I do use LR/Mogrify (only for borders) and it works great. What are the complaints about it?

Andrew, I just read the comments on Adobe's site that refers to it. Perhaps it is worth a try just for borders?

I have a thing about taking away anything, pretty much, from my picture to add a border so I'm annoyed with SEP 2's teasing me with those border options - so close but they're just not OK for me.

Hi BB

In photoshop elements I have used the crop tool to set the crop larger than the actual image to produce a white border around my original image. For black and white images, I then went into silver efex to make use of its varied borders to get the look I wanted. The silver efex border goes over the white border I created around my image in photoshop elements, therefore preserving all the content of my original image. That would do the trick for black and white images.

it's a bit of a surprising shortcoming in LR.
If you don't want to go to the hideous expense of purchasing PS just for this, there are free alternatives ... GIMP - for Mac OS X for instance; it has a "filter" to create borders, automatically. It does everything that PS does, but has it's own gui style and terminology that PS users get sniffy about

EDIT: I don;t know why, I just assumed you're a MAC user ... it's also available for Windoze and for Linux

Thanks for the suggestion, Paul. I am a Mac user. Apparently I might be able to use the Print function in Lightroom to set some borders..export and reimport. I have to figure it out with some help - when I do, I'll report back.

Bump

anyone solved an easy way for borders in LR - plus text

- I know that it can be done in the Print module but I find it clumsy and totally unsatisfactory

- a plug in for the develop module would be ideal

I use Picasa after developing in LR, if you can download its FREE for windows, whether its for Mac I don't know. There are all sorts of things in it to play with and one is borders...I've just upgraded to 3.9 version so easy to find things.
It might suit you BB it costs nothing just uninstall if you don't like it. Its from Google software. The borders has a variety of colours and widths and an option for the inside of the frame.
Check my last flickr for a very basic pic:

Thanks, Penny. I'd really love to have something that worked with LR and am surprised that nothing has been developed yet, but I think this new version may have it. I do not want any of the "frames" to take away even an iota from the image...as in eat into it, if you know what I mean. The best I've seen is the way Don has always done his with PhotoShop.

I'm using Mogrify plain white 30px outer border which doesn't take anything away of the image. I also use a thin black 2px Mogrify inner border or create a thin black border with Silver Efex Pro2 where I set the size to -100% so it takes away the minimal amount of the image. This combined with the white outer looks great to me.

A lot of my iPhone apps have borders. I particularly like the "instant" Polaroid-like borders. Here's an example...

I hope the SEP modifies the way they integrate borders so that they appear outside of the image and don't crop it.
