Thanks to John's thread about the "Seven Elements That Make a Great Black and White Photgraph by Scott Bourne from Photofocus, I found out that this new version -Elements 9 has now finally be released.:D I've never used Elements but plan on looking into it and may give it a try.

A serious disappointment for Mac users. Elements 9 no longer comes bundled with Bridge which has now been replaced by the 'Organiser'. Elements and Organiser contain what some photographers call the 'crippled' version of ACR whereas Bridge CS4 (with Elements 8 for the Mac) used to contain the full version of ACR. Serious photographers who shoot Raw and use the Mac will not be satisfied with Elements 9, imho. I downloaded a trial version and deleted it, the crippled Raw functionality was the deal breaker for me and am back to Elements 8. Serious photographers should spend a little more and go for Lightroom, perhaps with the release of Elements 9, that's what Adobe wants them to do!

Thanks for this Mayank. I'm pretty new to all this and only began using Lightroom about a month or two ago. I was hoping that this Elements 9 would be a good choice for me since I don't have any other software at this point, other than LR 3. I, too, use a Mac. Had been using Aperture 3 but gave up, sadly had to. For someone such as myself who has LR do you think the version 9 is appropriate? I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know what ACR is, though I know I could do a quick search. Any pointers welcome regarding the idea of adding Elements into my mix.

That's very interesting! I never knew Elements 8 had the full version of ACR! I have lightroom 2.7 and will upgrade to 3 soon. May as well keep Version 6 of Elements.

BBW, ACR = Adobe Camera Raw, a Photoshop window that contains settings almost similar to the 'Develop' tab of Lightroom. In Photoshop this window opens when one opens a Raw file and after adjustments are made to the raw file in ACR, the image opens in Photoshop interface. I think you don't need Elements unless you wish to work in layers which is advanced photography editing. I suggest you familiarize yourself with Lightroom first.

Andy, yes, that makes sense. I waited till the day Elements 9 was released, downloaded the trial version and rejected it immediately owing to the crippled ACR. Placed an order for Elements 8 immediately afterward, which arrived today! Sometimes I am quite efficient :D

I may do the same then. Elements 8 should be cheaper now 9 is out!

BB-As said above ACR is like a simple version of Lightroom in development mode. If you look at screen shots of ACR you will see a similarity to Lightroom as the sliders are in similar places. You can of coarse do SO much more in Lightroom.

Andy, I think you can order a box pack of Elements for 8 / Upgrade to simplify things; yes, Elements 8 should be cheaper than 9. Here in India Adobe is no longer giving licenses for Elements 8, one has to buy 9 and then request a downgrade. However, owing to my rare efficiency I got an Elements 8 license before Adobe's systems were updated to give Elements 9 license / serial numbers

How odd! I'll see what they are doing in the UK. I may just upgrade LR to LR3 and use Elements 6 as is as i have not needed to use anything that Elements hasn't got.

I wanted to buy Elements 9 for two reasons: 1. Since it is based on the CS5 platform, it contains the new Noise Reduction algorithms that are far superior to the one used in Elements 8 (based on CS4), 2. So that I could keep updating new versions of ACR as and when they are released. Bridge with Elements 8 (Bridge CS4) does not support ACR plugins beyond 5.7 but fortunately for me 5.7 supports all the cameras that I have. Anyhow, like I said earlier, the crippled version of ACR is a real downer specially as it does not contain lens distortion correction functionality which I use a lot. :(
