Should we have separate forums for different types of fixed lens cameras?

Hall of Famer
Should we have separate forums for different brands? Does it de-emphasize small sensor compacts to lump them in one forum like this? Please vote and also leave a comment. Thanks!

I don't think it's necessary. There are a limited number of "serious compacts" out there so seperating the forums would almost slow things down.

I own a number of "serious compacts" from different brands and like being able to talk about them all all under one "roof".

Just my opinion of course!

Just cast my vote - "No", though I probably could be persuaded otherwise. However, after reading Michael's and Neil's posts, I agreed with them. I enjoy being exposed to all sorts of different cameras. I guess that's not too surprising.;)

I also vote "no." Most of the fixed-lens serious compacts are very similar (perhaps even the same sensor for various models) and I think it's appropriate to place them in the same category. The two that stand out - the Sigma DP series and Leica X1 - have relatively few users that a separate forum would likely be ignored for long periods of time. Maybe a significant rise in activity for anything outside the LX5-S95-EX1-GRDIII category would change my mind, but it seems like most of the members post photos from these high-end cameras.

I would keep things as they are. All I would ask is that when people post images they should always mention which camera was used.

As a compromise how about a thread for each camera and we each maybe post only what we think are our best images from that camera. The images could be ones also posted elsewhere but it would be an interesting resource for people wanting to see how the cameras perform. We already do it for the Sigma DP series.

No please. I like to compare the properties of the digital compacts as close as possible. There are already forums for the different makes. SERIOUS compacts is a nice description.

I just voted yes but intended to vote no :-( darn those small touch screens.

Sorry guys.

I think us fixed lens serious compact shooters can jointly share 1 forum. Let's show that we are grown ups and are here for the results (aka photos) and not only for the gear.

As David duchemin coined: gear is good, vision is better.

Let's leave the brand flames to the dpreview fora.

Sorry guys.

I voted yes, I think at least order it by manufacturer. Why? As a complete noob, the first thing I looked for was a canon sub section, as I was looking for information for the S95

"The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search:
s95"

Yeah, that does make it hard to find, doesn't it?

Thanks to everyone for continuing to vote.

(Just an aside - for searching....that's why adding tags to threads is important, so please do if you see they're missing. However they have to be at least 3 characters long.)
