Fuji Fuji x10 or some say x50

I guess I don't get all the enthusiasm here. It's nice and all that, but it seems to me basically a Fuji competitor to the G12 or P7100. Slightly larger sensor, 1 stop faster lens, and similar size. What am I missing?
Which could mean 2 stops advantage over competition, quite something for a pocketable camera. Plus manual zoom (!), hopefully better VF, Fujinon grade lens, and as per rumors 10fps. Good enough for me to expect this one to beat direct competition and to be as good as mft with slow kit zooms.

+1

Hmmmm...I can see the dSLR going! Can now tote around a Swiss Army knife with my razor blade.....and the beauty is that they'll both fit in the little Domke (F5XB) - Fuji X50 and X100 side by side. Almost sounds like a plan....and a 2/3" sensor isn't THAT small now is it :daz:

I'm calling your wife, Mark.

Oh Jeez, ummm, hey BB, can I petition you as a Mod please? I believe someone has hacked into my account and been sending messages from my terminal. Pffft this crazy talk about me buying another camera. I am perfectly happy with what I have thank you very much.

Hmmm, yep that should stick...

Ah different worlds, here you would get arrested for that!

Fuji promised me a production model by end of October, so I can hardly wait. I have a non-profit X-Mas project with kids in a township in Cape Town coming up this December, and I'm wondering wether the X10 can produce photographs that are technically suitable for publishing purposes (I was selected to do media relations and photography for our little charity). I could certainly borrow a Canon 5D MkII with assorted L lenses, large flash etc. for free to cover this (it's nice to have wealthy contributors), but I'd much prefer to to this way more discreetly with an X100 and an X10.

Yeah same here

In the vein of Justin's "Street Confidence" thread though, sometimes I wonder about things here in Australia. Often you'd probably get in more trouble for using a couple of Fujis in anger than wielding a blade or two in each hand. I might be exaggerating a tad, but honestly I often wonder whether the Nanny State has arrived over here....well we have a good start with a nanny as our head of state after all :warning:

I stole the analogy directly from Luminous Landscapre (if I recall correctly) who equated the GRDII as the razor and the GX200 as the Swiss Army knife...

No worries, Australia is still one of my favorite places (Fuji S100): :)

... and there I thought you were SC's very own Crocodile Dundee!!

A better answer than I had hoped for (damn you). Guess I have to start saving now.

Looking good, like a real camera and the optical VF really usable: Fujifilm X10 digital camera | Fujifilm Canada and:Fuji Guys - Fujifilm X10 Part 1 - First Look - YouTube
Now I have to figure out which camera(s) to sell before buying this one. My XZ-1 is in danger of having to find a new home:)

My G11 is leaving home this Saturday, and I was planning to get an XZ-1... but now... I think not.

[edit] Just checked the specs, looked at the video and theres only one word to be said now... SOLD!

I do like what Fuji seems to have done; instead of dumbing down a large sensor fixed lens camera, they've created a very high end small sensor camera that has most of the bells and whistles of the X100. It's a jumbo Canon G12 or Oly XZ-1, and ought to compete in that arena.

I wonder how the combination of 2/3 sensor and f2 aperture will fare against the Panasonic GF3X with its f3.5 zoom lens. That looks smaller than the X10 but should cost a lot more money.

The mechanical zoom extension is what impresses me the most. Putting that into a compact camera is really quite surprising.

I wonder if the camera will output raw files that have been shot using the EXR modes like DR, and how the raw files will compare with those from cameras like the S95 or GRD III. I don't expect the images to be like the Ricoh GXR, because that is DSLR territory, but I should hope they are noticeably better than the S95 and GRD III. Otherwise the feature set and ergonomics would be what put the X10 ahead.

I'm tempted to go on a wait list for this one. I was on the X100 list but I bought a GXR instead, and reports of the X100's slow and inaccurate AF made me satisfied that I'd made the right choice. But the X10 is another camera altogether, with a zoom range like the S95 but with a slightly larger sensor, and EXR technology. It's the first time I've been really excited about a camera for quite a while now.

A pocket size affordable Digilux 2 replacement:D Looking great on paper.

Great call mate. It is like the Digilux isn't it? Having watched the video now, I'm hankering for my X100 to be in a full black jacket....oh the stealth....

Looks like the legacy Pentax dSLR stuff will be on the way out. Even though the K-r qualifies as a compact - though my monster f2.8 zoom pushes the limits, I'll be fully compact. My only reservation is with the aperture and shutter controls....this is what I love so much about the X100....hmmmm?

Any ideas on the wait on these, do we think it'll be as extensive (and intensive) as the X100?

Finally, I have to say Archiver I've had both compacts and dSLRs of many types and I don't see what the major gripe with the X100 AF is....then again I never experienced it with the original firmware?

Yeah, it looks pretty nice. Kind of a very high end version of an LX5 / XZ1 / S95. I don't have a real feel for how much larger the sensor is than those or how much smaller than m43. But if its much bigger, the f2 - f2.8 lens sounds pretty impressive. Assuming its jpeg engine is as good as the X100 (and why shouldn't it be), I suspect this is another camera to forego raw except in really challenging circumstances. If the X100 jpegs are as clean as they are up to 3200, I'd guess this might get you there at 1600 - certainly 800. I find anything beyond 400 a stretch on the small LX5 level cams. I can't see one for myself - I sold the LX5 because I just wasn't using it in favor of more specialized cameras, and I LOVED the LX5. So I doubt I'd end up using this much either. I could possibly see one for my wife as an upgrade from her P&S - better to use in her classroom in lowish light, to stop action with her kids on the playground. And I'd have plenty of time to play with it if it was around the house.

Anyone know if it has a silent shutter?

It's always a smart strategy: buying it for her:D But sometimes it fires back. The last time I bought an EPL2 with wide angle zoom (9-18mm), she decided that it was perfect for her. And gone it was.
