Fuji Fuji X10 Sample Images

Well, if there's an 85% viewfinder in the camera, then they could have made it more useful. Most shooters of reasonable ability will use the screen. Why, because of accuracy.
The finder should at minimum have an AF target point. So this says something about how the camera can operate. With the space used by the finder, an EVF could have been installed and made the camera a real gem. Of course it may have cost more but that's Fuji's problem not ours.
It's a nice camera for the money but who needs nice cameras?

I'm liking the X10 a lot. I put a Tom Abrahamsson mini soft release on it this afternoon. The image quality is, as I mentioned before, really good for the sensor size. I have yet to try the EXR mode but will soon. The OVF is bright and is useable but as Don just mentioned, why no focus point. A simple set of crosshairs would have been great. ISO1600 is very usable. More images soon. I need to shoot some PR stuff for the college this weekend. I will use both the X100 and X10. It should be interesting.

Then again, it all depends upon whether one needs or wants to use a viewfinder, right?

I continue to enjoy seeing everyone's pictures and hearing their experiences very much. David - how about you? Do you find the LCD is just fine or do you miss having the full optimal use of the viewfinder? With the X100 do you mostly use one of the viewfinders and sometimes the LCD and/or how does this influence your using the X10? When I had my LX5, it was strictly the LCD... I'm not sure if the X10's is the same size as the LX5's or not. All these acronyms!;)

P.S. David the image quality of your picture looks beautiful to me!

BB - Thanks! I use the LCD only when I have too on any of my cameras. Way too many years with an OVF or an EVF. ;) I really am looking forward to an LR update. The JPEGS are "very Fuji" - absolutely great. But I still like RAW. So far I really think it's a great little sibling to the X100.

It just occurred to me that if I take a 12 mp photo at ISO 3200 and then downsize it to a 6 mp equivalent, the 6 mp version won't be as noisy looking. So how much of the better image quality in terms of high ISO noise that the X10 is producing with the EXR sensor is actually due to the EXR technology as opposed to downsizing the image to 6 mp?

Can someone with a X10 do a test taking a high ISO photo at full size, then downsizing to 6 mp, and then compare it with an EXR photo at the same ISO?

Thanks!

That's a good idea, I'll try that this weekend.

Armando, you always make me smile!

I wonder...is your signature line fully up-to-date? You'll notice that Andy doesn't include his gear to his.

David, very nice indeed! I'm really looking forward to your overview once you feel like you're at home with the X10.:popcorm2:

BB - thanks again. Here's the "same" image, no PP in LR except for straightening and sizing down for web. A different frame but I think a look may be beneficial. No Zenfolio "flatening" either. ;)

Does the LCD switch off if you use the OVF?

How about some sample photos of the lens at 80-100mm (EFL) wide open? :) Thanks!!!

The OVF is just a dumb hole with enough lenses in it and a connection to the zoom mechanism so it'll zoom along with the lens. There's nothing electronic about it, so it doesn't know if its being looked through or not. So, no, the LCD doesn't switch off, although you have the option to turn it off manually if you want.

Here's the lens at the long end (112 mm EFL). The first one is wide open at f2.8, the next is at f3.6:

Interesting about "Zenfolio" flattening things out. Hmm. Thanks David.

I may have to succumb and see what I think myself, at some point. Meanwhile, I live vicariously and enjoy the X10's older sibling as my consort.;)

BB - yes, I've noticed it with Zenfolio since I started using the X100. It appears to make images slightly less contrasty. I think I will contact them and ask if they have an answer and/or any suggestions for better reposted images.
We have a rather prominent alum doing some workshops with some senior broadcast students tomorrow. You'll laugh when you see who it is. I plan on trying the X10 for the scenario with the X100 waiting should I feel I need it.
So far I'm really liking the X10 a lot. The OVF isn't horribly far off from the LCD, which is sorta' odd based on the 85% viewing area. Except, that is, up close when the parallax is pretty intense with the OVF and then the LCD is a given . I miss basic information the OVF but am getting by without much pf a problem. I'm really not a super fussy "photog" when it comes to cameras as long as the images are sharp, the DR is strong and the low-light capabilities, well, exceptional.;)

Played with a X10 today at the local shop. Very nicely built camera. High quality parts, and slightly smaller and lighter than the X100.

The OVF is almost like one of those OVF's that you attach on top of the camera. Good for framing, but that's about it. I couldn't tell by looking at the OVF if things were in focus or not, because they seemed to be always on focus. So I just relied on the "beep." Nevertheless, it's nice to have that option if and when there's a need for an OVF.

I took two photos of the same area to compare high ISO photo using EXR, and then taking one using aperture priority and then downsizing to 6 mp. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that the camera apparently picked the ISO for me when I was using EXR and it was shot at 1250. My aperture priority photo was at 1600. So after downsizing the 12 mp aperture priority to 6 mp, the EXR 6 mp photo looked much better. Hopefully, someone will do a better job with the test and report here.

It seems the X10 is a bit heavy handed in the application of noise reduction in the JPG's. The camera was set to standard, and even at ISO 400 (non EXR mode), I could see some noise reduction smearing. I think the images may look better if one reduces the noise reduction, IMO.

There were so many more modes in the X10, and unfortunately, I only spent about 20 minutes with the camera. Then I moved on to the V1. Without going into the discussion about the V1, IMO, the images of the V1 are slightly better than the X10. But the X10 was just a camera that evoked a more positive connection with me. Maybe it's the good looks. I'll probably drop by the store and play with both again tomorrow!

I had a quick play this morning with the camera. It was foggy and dull but i managed a few reasonable shots. I must say that the depth of field in super macro is very tiny! :D

Your garden still looks so beautiful, Andy - the colors are looking good in all the pictures and the close-ups are very good, indeed. Thanks for taking us on your getting to know the X10 journey.

Armando, I'll be interested to see what your next visit offers!

Having had the camera for only a few hours nothing is set up yet and I still have much to learn. Here are a couple straight from the camera which is basically at default settings. I've been playing in EXR auto and P modes and like what I'm seeing.

The mushrooms grew up last night .... in my lawn:)
I love the macro mode.

and I think this was EXR mode. To me its about Fuji colours and I've not tried the film simulation modes yet.

Right now it's time to read the manual!
