Canon Canon S100 Hands-On Review Video

Great timing, TCSJordan - I was just reading about this new little Canon yesterday... Still mulling it over, but I do like the size and the controls...and that nice 24mm wide angle.

Size does matter in certain situations and I'm thinking it's about the size of the GRD IV or possibly slimmer?

I'd be interested to know how you think it compares to the Fuji X10.

Yes, I read about this as well, Chuck. I am hoping that the issue will be cleared up quickly. These kinds of concerns can turn into a wildfire...even if it turns out that the problems are not endemic.

BB, I'm hoping it turns out to be an early production batch issue that has been resolved. Would be great if Canon investigated and made their findings public. Silence is not golden, at least for this potential buyer!

p.s. I do have the S90, which has been very reliable and the only truly pocketable enthusiast camera I've encountered. (No large pockets here, except in the two or three weeks we call winter on the Texas Gulf Coast!:D)

The S90 also fits nicely in a neoprene belt case not much bigger than a cellphone case. Oh, and somewhat ironically, the belt case is made by.....Olympus! Haven't checked the S100 dimensions, but I'm guessing it would fit in the same case.

I'd say the X10 is a slightly better camera overall, low light is a bit better and I love the handling. However, the S100 is half the size, and truly pocketable. If you can deal with a slightly larger camera, I'd go for the X10. If you want the best pocketable compact on the market, go for the S100.

Thanks for the video review and the thoughts on the S100 vs. X10.

I have the S90 and the X10. The X10 is definitely better than the S90 when it comes to IQ. But yeah, for pocketability, nothing beats the S90/95 and now the 100.

I had an S90 and I'd shoot it reluctantly at ISO 400 and never higher. The LX5 was about the same, maybe just slightly better. I heard that the S95 was essentially unchanged from the S90 in that respect. To the extent you could tell from the images in the video, the S100 looks plenty useable right up to 1600 and probably 3200 in an emergency, very much like the GRD4 and very close to the X10. Man, these little sensors are getting GOOD! Seriously impressive. M43 really needs to up its game and it doesn't appear there's any physical reason it can't.
