Sony Joined the ranks

This system is positively crying out for some more decent lenses. I've had a lot of fun with manual focussing Contax G and Konica Hexanon lenses but it's a pain having to keep changing adapters all the time and I'm longing for some auto focus lenses now!

Christilou, as we seem to have followed a somewhat parallel path with the NEX ... I know exactly how you feel.

With my new A33, I do enjoy the ease of autofocus with a 50mm prime and having choice of various automatic lenses. One of the other reasons, I went this route is that I can use M42 legacy lenses with a very slim adapter that also has AF confirmation chips built-in.

I'm keeping the NEX but I couldn't wait patiently for new lenses :)

What's funny is that I actually bought this camera because of its simplicity. Stepping up from point and shoots, I wanted something easy to carry around and with manual functions to begin taking better shots. I never planned on carrying around suitcases or backpacks full of equipment, so the 18-55mm lens has been more than adequate. I have ordered an additional telephoto lens, and that is about all I need. I larger flash would be nice, but not a bit deal to me.

I have been pleased so far with my camera and the shots I have taken. At some point I may choose to upgrade to a more professional camera, but the NEX is great for me. Each of us has different needs and this camera is the right one for me at this time.:)

Dpr had an exclusive interview with a Sony executive recently. The interview covered a variety of devices, but there is specific references to the Nex line. From the interview:

Meanwhile, the NEX concept will expand in several directions, he said: 'The concept of the NEX 3 and 5 were for people who already have a compact stills camera and want to take a step up, but see a traditional DSLR as big, heavy and hard to use. We think these models are a very good fit to those customers. But also there are customers using NEX in addition to their DSLR, so we're planning to expand NEX in a more easy way, a lighter way, but we'll also expand to make models that have more manual control and more DSLR-like capability.' He went onto say that "'the successors to the NEX-3 and NEX-5 are on the horizon."

Encouraging to see that Sony sees they have a good thing with the Nex line and are willing to address both those who are moving up from P&S as well as those who are traditional DSLR users looking to move into something lighter. We will see if they actually do so.

Could we be seeing a camera that will really replace the DSLR? This could be interesting!

Taken with my Sony NEX5

That is a very colorful vibrant image. I have just looked at the full size version on your Flickr and i must say I'm very very impressed with the detail and quality.

Just a few tweaks and this camera could really take off.

Don't tell me that you are now taking your NEX "to Church" with you

Windows are difficult - I reckon it's always best to take them as RAW with +1 and experiment - as you have more latitude to "pull them back" - but you always get the extreme contrast between very bright and dark which cams find difficult to cope with - it's the light bit that's difficult to get right.

Since I got my EP-1 I have become far more "religious" and I now visit "churches" a lot more often than when I was a simple DSLR shooter - but I seem to be reverting back to "the dark side" since the M8 came into view

I always have this problem with the LX3 when shooting church interiors. It's fantastic because it's small and silent but it does struggle with the dynamic range of these scenes. I take bracketed RAW shots and use Photomatix exposure blending.

My A200 was better at dealing with this challenge and I'm hoping the NEX5 will be better still. I'll find out in a few weeks when I'm going to be in Prague for a few days.

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned so far but Imaging Resources has a long interview with Mark Weir from Sony which includes some discussion of the NEX cameras and DPReview has a summary of an interview with a senior executive from the company which also covers the NEX models, including future models. Key quote: 'we're planning to expand NEX in a more easy way, a lighter way, but we'll also expand to make models that have more manual control and more DSLR-like capability.'

If the next NEX camra is a more 'Pro' version then it could replace the DSLR! When the NEX range was released they said at the time there was going to be a NEX 7. I wonder if this is what they are talking about?
