Sony oops! Just bought a Nex5 & 16mm f/2.8 kit / It's Arrived!!

Yes, NEX is fully supported on LR 3.x.

Like others, I wasn't much of a WA shooter, but the 24mm Eq lens (plus I got the FE adapter) has brought me into trying it out. It's a lot more fun than I gave it credit for!

Phew!! Thanks that's great to know i can shoot RAW straight away.

I love and prefer the wider side of things. I have a canon DSLR and the longest focal length i have is 50mm for AF. I do have a 135mm Carl Zeiss Jena lens but that's it.

Andy,

Which m42 adapter did you get and from whom, if you don't mind?

Jumped onboard with a Nex 5 on Monday and so far am very pleased. I use a mac and the software update went very smoothly. There have been some recent threads (elsewhere - not here) that have complained about the process on a mac, but I read over the guidelines first which are pretty standard, and had no issues (running 10.6.6.). Sold off my Canon dslr (again) as I was really only using it for sports shots of my son anyway. I was able to tryout a Nex for a couple days and it will be alright for my needs. I found myself going down the money pit again with the Canon gear/lenses and just decided it wasn't worth it for what I really needed it for. On the Nex with the ability to assign a couple of the hardware buttons to other functions, my earlier trepidation about the menu system are mostly gone. I was encouraged to see that Sony is planning on a future model that will supposedly incorporate more controls, etc. for the more advanced users.

Although I was ahead of the game after I sold off the Canon gear, I told the bride that this would be it for awhile. I don't think she believed me. ;)

Hi

The adapter i went for was from this page but they are not showing so i must have bought the last one. Plenty more here: m42 to NEX5 adapter items - Get great deals on Camera Lenses, Digital Camera Accessories items on eBay UK!

What software did you upload from your disc? Also have you upgraded the firmware yet?

Cheers

Congrats on the NEX purchase! Initially I was skeptical because of its unconventional look but I think it did a great job of breaking from tradition.

I have just been looking at images on Flickr of the Nex with old manual focus lenses and YOWZA!! Amazing quality!!!! Up there with the best I'd say. I think this is where the Nex is going to really shine!

Thanks - I was just curious which one you went for. There is a bunch of suggested vendors within the Nex forum at dpr also.

It is buried in my earlier thread, but I did do the update. I haven't even looked at the contents of the disk and most likely won't use anything that is on it. I use a mac (10.6.6), Aperture 3 and the Nik Collection for PP needs.

I am not even sure what is on the disk, but most likely no. You have LR and Elements and that is all you need to organize and PP. The o/s camera updates are on the Sony site. Double check, but this link is from the UK Sony website and has the windows and mac updaters. Just download the appropriate programs and follow the directions and it should be a smooth process. They use the usb - camera to pc method.

Cool!! Thanks Really can't wait now!!

I want a pink one. :)

Seriously.

I think they only come in the Nex3, though. But they take Leica lenses with an adapter, so it's all good.

One reason for choosing the NEX is that the images taken with old manual lenses are as good as a proper DSLR.

SO how does manual focusing with MF lenses work? What do you need to do to get the camera to zoom in?

I thought my NEX would turn up today as it went out in last night's post (apparently!) but has not turned up as yet. I have not been this excited about a new camera for months and months! The last one i got excited about was the GF1.

IT'S HERE!!! WOOOHOOO!!! Just going to open it right now!!! Yipeeeeee!!!:dance4::dance3::dance::whoo:

Battery charging so will wait till it's finished then i can see what firmware it has. It states 3D comparability so I'm guessing it's the latest?????

Anyhoo here it is!

Battery charged, Firmware installed (Easy peasy) quick set up, soft function keys allocated with shortcuts and a few images taken. In a word AWESOME!!!!

1, Menu system a bit tricky but not rocket science.
2, Soft keys with new functions are FAB, makes life much easier
3, Quick focus even in dim light
4, Image quality pretty damn good again in poor light with ISO 800 (Never been that high before!!!) and exposure compensation.
5, Battery runs down quite quickly, may have to get a spare!
6, Can't wait to use it in good light.
7, Cant wait to use it with MF lenses!

Superb stuff!!!!!!!:dance2:

Oh and not selling my s95 anymore. It's too good to loose!!(y)

To someone who owned one camera for about ten years back when I was last into photography in the 1970's and 1980's, I can't tell you how hilarious that sentence sounds. Unfortunately, I seem to have acquired the same gear acquisition syndrome that most around here have (probably dut to hanging around on forums like this one) and I can relate all too well to the feeling. But to actually see it written like that sort of brings home the absurdity to me a bit.

Nonetheless, I'm glad you have it, hope you enjoy it, and looks forward to seeing what you shoot with it, which is all that ultimately matters...

I think it may just be one of those batteries that "wear in" after a while. I found it drained quite quickly at first but it doesn't seem to be much of a problem of late. Wish I had the courage to update my firmware but I'm not computer literate enough I'm afraid and after all the problems I read about the update frying the cameras, I just decided not to.
