Always wanted to take a shot of my son's guitar. Taken on my A55,85mm prime, and lots of PP.

Children waved Union flags and cheered as more than 200 soldiers from 101 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), based at Carver Barracks in Wimbish, took part in a special homecoming parade, at which they were granted Freedom of the District by Uttlesford District Council.

But they didn't all make it back OK

They have one of the most demanding jobs in Helmand: to walk ahead to find and isolate improvised explosive devices (IEDs), before calling in the bomb disposal experts to defuse or destroy the devices.

And now the dangerous work of the teams who search for the Taliban's hidden bombs in Afghanistan has been formally recognised with a new search badge, given to some 250 of the men and women recently returned from their tour of Helmand.

Amongst those receiving the badge was Capt Luke Sinnott, 31, one of the Royal Engineer search advisors who lost both of his legs after a bomb exploded beneath him.

"On the day I was injured, we were working in an area known for shootings," he said.

"We also knew it was saturated with IEDs and it was very difficult for the locals and international forces to move around.

"On the day I was blown up, I'd elected to go forward to deal with the device, to keep the guys safe. It was on my third walk down the route that a device exploded."

'Going to lose'
The explosion was sudden and devastating.

"Everything seems great and fine and then everything goes black.

"You don't feel pain straight away - it's more the shock, as though someone has punched you on the face."

He added: "Because of the size of some of the charges, when there's an explosion it always feels as if it's on top of you, even if it's 20 yards away, but this time it was me."

Will, thank you so much for these photographs and for the story that made them. They're very moving and I can only imagine what it was like for you to be there.

BillN - please tell me what is it that began - is it the grape harvest?

greyelm, you have the X100 in the palm of your hand - stunning colors and what a beautiful spot - well, both spots, since I'm going back a page.:D

Christian, I saw this on your Flickr stream - thanks so much for getting an account there!! I love the simplicity as well as the juxtaposition - and such superb color, too.:friends:

Kevin - that's a really wonderful photograph that exudes acoustic guitar. Should I assume that you've already had a print made for this son? I love the lighting and your "pping" - to me, it looks prefectly realistic and right.

And Paul, I like the mirror's reflection and the young lady in question.:flowers_2:

Wow, Andy - that is one intense ceiling! I must ask, are those colors as is or did you enhance them for your own artistic designs? Do I detect a little HDR touch? Kind of Maxfield Parrish goes Baroque!:D I like it!

I have to admit that I googled Castle Howard and found out that Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisted was filmed there. It must be a fascinating place to visit. How great that one can photograph there. Do you have a set on Flickr?

this is exactly as-seen - PP was done only to achieve the exact colour and contrast I saw

Every time she went past, there was the double image of her and her reflection back-to-back ... but, annoyingly, I was never quick enough ...she was about 6' 2" by the way

Wonderful, Paul! Love those colors - and I think I'd like to live behind that door, as well!

As for that young lady being 6' 2" - I thought she looked like a tall drink of water.(y)

Two very different examples of what the fall season brings with its brand of beauty. Christian, looking at your photograph I believe I can smell the leaves and feel the dampness of the forest - beautiful closeup with excellent colors. Christina - lovely, with a bit of nostalgia, perhaps? You'd better decide upon keeping your Color Efex Pro 4. ;)
