After attending a funeral a few weeks back, I wanted to see what was left of post-storm (Sandy) Asbury Park. Pretty heartbreaking to see some of my favorite places from my childhood reduced to skeletal remains.

I grew up on the Jersey Shore, Mitch, and it is indeed hard to accept that much of it is never going to look the same again. On the other hand, there's a lot that is still there and places like the Casino in your photo will be rebuilt. What is important for many seasonal residents and relatively new arrivals to understand is that those barrier islands have shifted since the beginning of time and will continue to do so. Much of what we regard as "permanent" construction is anything but that.

Thank you for this, Mitch. It is sad and upsetting and for the people who live and work in these barrier islands it is heartbreaking and life changing. Steve, you're so right about the shifting and the fact that nothing is permanent on this kind of island world.

Hard as it is to believe, having grown up in Westchester County NY...north of Manhattan, I have never been to the Jersey Shore. Growing up we went to Long Island's beaches from Gilgo to Quogue. As an adult my ocean destination has been the Outer Banks of North Carolina which has seen its own share of terrible storms and changing geography.

Ray is another Jersey shore photographer who I know loves the land and the water. Let's hope that this year is a quiet one.

Seems like a lot of forum users here are from the Northeast. We should do a photo walk sometime. NYC Chinatown may be fun.
