After seeing Joe McNally and Zack Arias and what they do with the high speed synch of the X100S shooting at 1/1000 wirelessly I decided to try it with my Aputure Trigmaster Plus units.

In a word -- works great.

The shot below is ISO 200, f/4 at 1/1000s on a sunny afternoon. My wife patiently modeled for me while I played with this and she is standing in the shade and would be as dark as the house wall to her left without the flash. If you look closely you'll see some sun dappling on her where the sun was coming through the tree she's standing under.

This was done using a little Olympus FL-36R that isn't real powerful, shot in manual and dialed to 1/2 power. I was holding it over my head and off to camera left.

As you can see it lit her up as if by the sun and the sunlit background down the street behind her is actually a little dark.

I don't do much strobe stuff like this, but this incredibly high speed sync opens up some nice possibilities which I'll use at a wedding I'm shooting this next weekend.

That's not all... with the built-in ND filter you get even more latitude and you can overpower the sun at f/2.0 with the X100S even using just the little on-board flash unit - let alone a larger unit :D

If you haven't seen it already, David Hobby has a really cool post on this showing how he did a 19-person group portrait overpowering daylight with just a couple SB-800s. I'm only just getting into flash and lighting but the possibilities of a leaf shutter are pretty exciting!

Out of curiosity, what did you use for radio triggers? I just bought a pair of cheap Yongnuo RF-603s for using with the X-E1 and X100S, but I also figured out my Nikon-version RF-622Ns will work as well, if I use a little hotshoe adapter in between.

Impressive indeed. Mine is limited to 1/250 and that is sometimes just not enough.

    Great, Jay, thanks!

Yes, I'd already sussed the ND use but I'll look up that page when I get a chance. I saw a long youtube vid by Hobby about the X100S and how he sets his up and what you can do with it. Some of Arias videos of his photoshoots with the X100S also deal with it.

I wasn't sure my relatively inexpensive Aputure units would work at 1/1000 -- but they do. I mentioned that I'm using Aputure Trigmaster Plus units. I got a bunch of them dirt cheap because they have an easily fixable defect that caused some to sell them so I'm loaded with a bunch of good ones now, lol.

I didn't know there was a video, I'll have to dig that up too.

And so you did... no idea why I didn't see the Aputure mention in the original post, guess that's what I get for not having coffee this morning and trying to Internet! ;)

Oh, man, another reason for me to pick up an X100. I want to try some of this high speed flash sync .

This is David Hobby's blog post on using the HSS. Using a cable he's pushed it to 1/4000 of a second.

Here's the video with a walkthrough of the X100S from his point of view:

Video from Zack Arias where he uses the technique for some photos of a local radio personality named Esin:
